Rules for the NAMTA Sonata/Sonatina Celebration
1. Students entering this event must be students of NAMTA
piano teachers.
2. Each student enters according to his/her grade level:
• Level I 1-3 grade
• Level II 4-6 grade
• Level III 7-9
grade
• Level IV 10-12
grade
• Level V Collegiate
3. A Sonatina or Sonata from any time period is
acceptable.
A student will play any two
movements of a Sonatina or a fast movement of a Sonata. (Slow movements of a Sonata do not
qualify.) Certain Sonatinas are of a
level of difficulty that the committee has allowed for a few exceptions. Click here for a list of one movement sonatinas that are acceptable. Any other exceptions must be
submitted to the committee by May 31 (prior to the upcoming event.)
4. The rating system is based on points, which accumulate
over the years entered. The ratings and
points are as follows:
• Superior Plus 6 points medal award
• Superior 5
points blue
ribbon award
• Excellent 4
points red
ribbon award
• Very Good 3
points white
ribbon award
A trophy is presented at
accumulated point levels of 15, 25, 35, 45, 55 and 60. Participation in the event does not need to
be in consecutive years to accumulate points.
5. Student auditions are open to the public. Students and their families are asked to stay
to hear the entire level.
6. Pieces are to be performed by memory. Music is to be provided for the judge. No photocopies are acceptable. The music must be erased of extraneous marks
or comments and each measure must be numbered.
7. A student may perform any one movement for “comments
only”, a white ribbon, and no points.
8. Trophies and ribbons are awarded to students at the end
of the last performance of each level.
9. Packets, which include judge’s critique, and any
unclaimed ribbons, may be picked up by the teachers at the conclusion of the
auditions.
10. The deadline for entries will be three weeks before the
event. Mailed entries must be postmarked
no later than that cut-off date.
