Sonata-Sonatina Celebration

Rules for the NAMTA Sonata/Sonatina Celebration

1. Students entering this event must be students of NAMTA piano teachers.

2.  Each student enters according to his/her grade level:

•             Level I                                   1-3 grade

•             Level II                                  4-6 grade

•             Level III                                7-9 grade

•             Level IV                                10-12 grade

•             Level V                                 Collegiate

3.  A Sonatina or Sonata from any time period is acceptable.

A student will play any two movements of a Sonatina or a fast movement of a Sonata.  (Slow movements of a Sonata do not qualify.)  Certain Sonatinas are of a level of difficulty that the committee has allowed for a few exceptions.  Click here for a list of one movement sonatinas that are acceptable.  Any other exceptions must be submitted to the committee by May 31 (prior to the upcoming event.)

4.  The rating system is based on points, which accumulate over the years entered.  The ratings and points are as follows:

•             Superior Plus                     6 points                                medal award

•             Superior                               5 points                                blue ribbon award

•             Excellent                              4 points                                red ribbon award

•             Very Good                          3 points                                white ribbon award

A trophy is presented at accumulated point levels of 15, 25, 35, 45, 55 and 60.  Participation in the event does not need to be in consecutive years to accumulate points.

5.  Student auditions are open to the public.  Students and their families are asked to stay to hear the entire level.

6.  Pieces are to be performed by memory.  Music is to be provided for the judge.  No photocopies are acceptable.  The music must be erased of extraneous marks or comments and each measure must be numbered.

7.  A student may perform any one movement for “comments only”, a white ribbon, and no points.

8.  Trophies and ribbons are awarded to students at the end of the last performance of each level.

9.  Packets, which include judge’s critique, and any unclaimed ribbons, may be picked up by the teachers at the conclusion of the auditions.

10.   The deadline for entries will be three weeks before the event.  Mailed entries must be postmarked no later than that cut-off date.
